Russian Quake Response

For those of you who are still unaware of it, an earthquake that measured 7.7 on the Richter Scale hit Russia around 8 hours ago. An UNOCHA spokesperson who spoke on conditions of anonnymity (due to agency policy) said that although there are no serious casulaties reported, access to the area is difficult, with transport infrastructure being seriously affected .

It was said that "EMERCOM of Russia assesses the situation as a regional emergency". Although EMERCOM of Russia is using Beriev-200 aircraft for delivering of the supplies and experts to the shore area near the epicenter, the lack of operational short-runways are apparently a big hindrance to this effort.

The EMERCOM Far-East Regional center and specialists from Federal team "Tsentrospas" are currently involved in disaster response activities.
