Support UNICEF: Help malnourished children in the Horn of Africa

On Friday May 12, 2006, UNICEF launched a Child Alert briefing on the Horn of Africa, documenting the current situation of children affected by the drought across Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti.

Rain is falling in East Africa, but too late to halt much of the devastation of six months of severe drought. Millions of pastoralists have seen their livelihoods wrecked. Tens of thousands of children are so weakened as to be at serious risk of dying. Launching UNICEF’s Child Alert: Horn of Africa report in Geneva, as well as an appeal for the funding gap of $54 million out of the original appeal for US$80 million, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, Rima Salah, said that rain had actually deepened the crisis in some areas, while providing limited relief in others.
