URGENT: State of Emmergency Declared in Suriname

A few minutes ago the President of Suriname declared a state of emergency for the affected areas. Due to continued torrential rainfall, the situation is deteriorating further. Airstrips are innundated, thus, creating challenges to the logistics for an aid operation.

The Goverment of Suriname is expected to call for international assistance any moment. Local media reports indicate that about 15.000 people have been displaced already and that the infrastructure has been eradicated in several places. More rain is espected to fall in the low land, likely to directly affect the situation in the capital Paramaribo.
