Pacific Ocean Quake Near Papua New Guinea


A strong earthquake struck under the Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea, the US Geological Survey said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, but authorities warned there was a chance of a tsunami in nearby areas.

The magnitude 6.8 quake struck at 1019 GMT (2019 AEST) and was centred 60 kilometres south of the island province of Bougainville and 53 kilometres below the earth's surface, the USGS said. It said no reports of damage or injuries had been received.
