Powerful Earthquake hits Jakarta

A powerful earthquake has struck the Indonesian island of Java, shaking tower blocks in the capital of Jakarta and causing people to run from their homes in panic.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage from the quake which the U.S. Geological Survey measured at 7.5 on the Richter scale. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no danger of a tidal wave.

The quake shortly after midnight was felt in densley-populated west and central Java island, according to CNN's Kathy Quiano, who said many people took to the streets in panic.
