Update 3: Tsunami Warning for the Indian Ocean

According to sources on the ground, a local tsunami (July 2006 Java Quake) measuring 2m in height hit a West Java resort where 5 people are confirmed to have died and officials have stated that the threat of the tsunami being widespread is highly unlikely. Meanwhile USAR teams from France and Germany are monitoring the situation and UNOSAT has started map production over affected areas.


The following is the second tsunami bulletin issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center via the TsunamiWarning Indian Ocean list:

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL GAUGE DATA INDICATE THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED.
NEWS MEDIA HAVE ALSO REPORTED THAT A DAMAGING LOCAL TSUNAMI
OCCURRED. BASED ON HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA
PLUS CURRENT SEA LEVEL READINGS A MORE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI
THREAT PROBABLY DOES NOT EXIST.

SOME AREAS FURTHER FROM THE EPICENTER COULD EXPERIENCE SMALL
SEA LEVEL CHANGES AND STRONG OR UNUSUAL COASTAL CURRENTS.

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL BULLETIN ISSUED BY THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI
WARNING CENTER FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
BECOMES AVAILABLE.

THE JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY MAY ISSUE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
FOR THIS EVENT.
