Suriname Flooding: Perspective from an Aid Agency

The following information was just sent in to us by a volunteer translator in The Netherlands:

The general opinion by local aid agencies in Suriname that is being voiced on forums and chatrooms in Holland, is that relief personnel don't want donors in the Netherlands & the EU to send relief items because it would pose a logistical problem to sort through everything.

It also seems that the President of Suriname has been calling on local businesses to donate to the aid efforts and there have been lots of people who have condemned that as businesses in suriname already do not have enough to make it on their own.

Representatives of aid agencies have indicated that once the relief effort goes into the next phase, from disaster recovery to rehabilitation and redevelopment, basic essentials such as food from overseas would be necessary because most farms have been severely damaged.
